About Tour of Duty

The Union Government launched the Tour of Duty or Agnipath Scheme on June 14 2022, with the aim of introducing enticing recruitment initiatives for Indian Youth to serve in the armed forces.

The program known as AGNIPATH or Tour of Duty allows civilians to English in the army, navy, and air force for a period of four years. Participants in this program are refereed to as Agniveers.

Under the Tour of Duty Army Scheme, individuals are released after completing four years of service. Subsequently, only 25 percent of these soldiers will be offered permanent full-time positions based on their performance and merit. The concept of Tour of Duty was spearheaded by the late Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat.

It introduces a novel recruitment approach, allowing civilians to serve for a limited period in the armed forces. The recruitment process is merit-based and covers soldiers, sailors, and airmen encompassing all three services of the armed forces.

The primary objective is to recruit around 46,000 personnel below officer rank annually across the three services, with two recruitment cycles held each year, spaced six months apart.

Following the four-year service period, up to 25% of Agniveers will be selected as regular cadres based on a centralized, transparent, and rigorous evaluation.

The eligibility criteria for the Tour of Duty scheme are as follows:

• Candidates must be between 17.5 and 21 years of age.
• Both male and female candidates can apply.
• Martial status must be unmarried.
• The minimum qualification is a 10th-class pass.
